Thirty Years of Dreamgirls and AIDS in America

December 20th 1981 I made my Broadway debut in what has become one of the iconic musicals of the 80s, Dreamgirls. As I look back, it is hard for me to believe that it was thirty years ago just as it is hard for me to believe that June 5th, 2011 marks thirty years of AIDS in America. Thirty years of Dreamgirls and AIDS and this is where my story begins.
Dreamgirls was the best and worst of all times for me. As a young woman full of dreams herself, the best was being an original Dream Girl, creating the role of Deena Jones, being nominated for the prestigious Antoinette Perry Award, the Tony for Best Actress. Win or lose, I would forever be referred to as "Tony nominated Actress, Sheryl Lee Ralph." Wonderful!
Night after magical night, The Dreams brought audiences to their feet in thunderous applause letting us know that we were loved, really, truly, deeply loved.

Divas Simply Singing! is a magical evening of song and entertainment that will benefit The Diva Foundation and Women Alive Coalition, a treatment based organization created by and for women living with HIV and AIDS. This unusual event features a host of the most talented women in the entertainment business united in a benefit concert to continue the courageous battle against HIV/AIDS.
Every year, Divas Simply Singing! suprises audiences with some of the world's most talented divas. It's a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see your favorite divas in an unusually intimate setting and discover new divas to love! Diva discoveries include Stacey "Fergie" Ferguson and a 6-year-old "Raven" Symone.
